WATERLOO
ABBA
1974
In 2023, Sweden equalled the record for most wins at Eurovision. The first of those 7 victories took place in 1974. It was 50 years ago that ABBA triumphed with “Waterloo”. The group was refreshing with its fashion and music. ABBA’s appearance was a genuine line in the sand. From then on, the Eurovision Song Contest gained unprecedented credibility through the global success of the Swedes. Domestically, ABBA’s win ushered in an age where Swedish pop would have a lasting impact on music that continues to this day. Only seventeen countries participated in 1974. Finland and Switzerland awarded the most points to “Waterloo”. The win was a springboard for the worldwide domination of ABBA. This was achieved with subsequent releases that included “Fernando”, “Mamma Mia”, “S.O.S.”, “Dancing Queen” and “Money, Money, Money”.
