Marvin Gaye
Other Motown artists had already had a stab at recording the song composed by Barrett Strong and Norman Whitfield. Label chief Berry Gordy argued against releasing Marvin Gaye’s reading of “I Heard It Through The Grapevine”. When it was finally unleashed to the public in 1968, the disc went all the way to the top and became Motown’s most successful single to date. More importantly, the song became a soul staple over subsequent decades. In 1985, it was used to great effect in a Levi’s ad which featured Nick Kamen. This campaign (referred to as "Launderette") prompted a re-release of the track which finally made the UK Top 10.
