SUPERSTITION
1972
The inevitable #1 song on this Top 100 is the
timeless “Superstition”. Without doubt, this is Stevie’s signature song.
Initially, however, it might never have been recorded by the gifted musician.
As Stevie prepared to record ‘Innervisions’ with co-producers Bob Marghouleff and
Malcolm Cecil, they recognized the next album would need to include a pair of big
hit singles. Renowned guitarist Jeff Beck played on one forthcoming album
track, “Lookin’ For Another Pure Love”. Stevie promised him a song for the
album Beck was due to release. The guitarist fancied “Maybe Your Baby”, but
Stevie later decided to keep that one for himself. Instead, he played Beck the
skeleton of a song he was working on. Stevie fleshed out the lyrics and Beck
prepared to record “Superstition” for his forthcoming album. When Stevie heard
the finished product, he realized he was giving away a potential major hit
single. Once again, the track was kept by its creator. Stevie did offer to
write yet another song for Beck, but by now relations between the two had
deteriorated. The song was added to ‘Innervisions’ and became its lead single. “Superstition”
topped the Soul Chart and became his second Pop #1 in America. The single
reached #11 in the UK. It won 2 Grammy Awards: Best R&B Song and Best
R&B Vocal Performance (Male). Jeff
Beck recorded his own version of the song the following year.
