MY CHERIE AMOUR
1969
The title track for Stevie’s last Sixties album release could easily have been cheesy or twee, but Stevie delivers it with balanced sensitivity and sincerity. While the song has aged well, it lay in waiting for 3 years before being issued. Stevie was inspired by The Beatles’ “Michelle” which also included some French lyrics. “My Cherie Amour” was written in 1966. Berry Gordy Jr. thought it sounded like a potential hit but asked for some tweaking by songwriters Hank Cosby and Sylvia Moy. The latter suggested the working title “Oh My Marcia” be changed to “My Cherie Amour”. Initially, it was released as a flip side for “I Don’t Know Why”. Radio gave it airplay and the song charted in its own right.
