Caffè Lattè presents the…
100 MOST ESSENTIAL
GIRL GROUP SONGS
25
Dedicated To The One I Love
THE SHIRELLES
When originally released in 1959, this single only
reached #83. It was re-issued 2 years later and peaked at #3 for 2 weeks in the
U.S. Hot 100. On Billboard’s Soul Chart, the song spent 2 weeks at #2.
24
Maybe
THE CHANTELS
This was a hit for one of the early girl groups.
Released in 1957, the disc reached #15 Pop and #2 Soul in America.
23
Say My Name
DESTINY’S CHILD
The group was splintering around the time of this
release. LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett were suddenly out, to be replaced
by Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin. The latter did not last long and the
group was trimmed down to a trio, completed by Beyoncé Knowles and her cousin Kelly Rowland. Despite all of this turmoil, the single
became the most successful Destiny’s Child hit thus far: topping the Pop and
R&B charts in America and also hitting #1 in Australia. The single was a
Top 5 smash in the UK and Canada in 2000.
22
Baby Love
THE SUPREMES
When this single reached the top in America, The
Supremes became the first Motown act to score a second chart-topper. The disc
also reached #1 on Billboard’s Soul Chart. In Britain, the single repeated its
success.
21
Mr. Sandman
THE CHORDETTES
Released in 1954, before the start of the Rock
Era, this disc charted well into the following year. It was one of the first girl
group hits. The single reached #1 in America and peaked at #11 in Britain.
CRITERIA:
Songs by groups or duos that only include female members and
released in the Rock Era (i.e. since 1955).
