Early incarnations of this girl group included
Dionne Warwick, her sister Dee Dee Warwick, Doris Troy and Judy Clay. In 1967, The
Drinkard Singers evolved into a new line-up adopting the new moniker The Sweet
Inspirations. This single was released that year and dented the US Pop and Soul
charts. Cissy Houston (mother of Whitney) was at the helm. The girl group
provided backing vocals for the likes of Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, Dusty
Springfield, Wilson Pickett and Van Morrison.

1984 Motown single peaked at #7 Pop and #3 R&B in America.

THE SPICE GIRLS
This was the lead single from the British group’s
sophomore album ‘Spiceworld’. Issued in 1997, the disc became the act’s fifth
consecutive #1 in the UK. It also hit the Top 10 in Europe, Canada, Australia
and New Zealand.

Phil Spector produced this thrilling example of
his Wall Of Sound. He co-wrote the song with Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. Billboard
Magazine listed it at #6 and #24 on the Soul and Pop charts respectively. The
disc fared better in Britain where it peaked at #11.

THE BOBBETTES
Issued in 1957, this was one of the first girl
group hits of the Rock Era. The members all attended the same school and a
teacher there inspired the girls to write the song. In America, the disc topped
the Soul Chart. It also made the Pop Top 10. The single proved especially
popular in Canada, where it reached #1. Diana Ross released a remake of the hit
in 1988.
