Caffè Lattè presents the…
100 MOST ESSENTIAL
GIRL GROUP SONGS
15
Cherry Bomb
THE RUNAWAYS
This all-female group included in its line-up Joan
Jett (who went on to score success with “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll”) and Lita Ford.
In 1976, this punk-styled single proved that women could rock out as well as
any male acts.
14
He’s So Fine
THE CHIFFONS
One of the highlights of the golden girl group sub-genre,
this 1963 single spent a week atop Billboard’s Hot 100 and reached #16 in
Britain.
13
Da Doo Ron Ron
THE CRYSTALS
A Top 5 hit on both sides of the Atlantic, this
single was another defining girl group classic penned by Ellie Greenwich, Jeff
Barry and producer Phil Spector. The nonsensical title was initially intended as
temporary, to be replaced once real words were thought up. They ended up
keeping it just the way it was. And record buyers still responded
enthusiastically.
12
Stop! In The Name Of Love
THE SUPREMES
The Supremes served up a steady string of hit
singles for Motown from 1964. Most are timeless, with this being one of their best
remembered. In 1965, the disc marched to #1 in America and #2 on its Soul
Chart. It also made the UK Top 10. To this day, the choreography associated
with the song is recalled with fondness.
11
Heat Wave
MARTHA & THE VANDELLAS
As was the case with “Stop! In The Name Of Love”,
this Motown smash was created by the peerless team consisting of Eddie and
Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier. The latter 2 also produced the 2 hits. Issued
in 1963, “(Your Love Is Like A) Heat Wave” topped Billboard’s Soul Chart and
peaked at #4 Pop. In 1975, the song returned to the US Top 5 via a remake by
Linda Ronstadt.
CRITERIA:
Songs by groups or duos that only include female members and
released in the Rock Era (i.e. since 1955).
