ABBA
Angetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Anderson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad (Frida) were already established as popular entertainers in Sweden before joining forces romantically and musically as the group ABBA. The group's profile was raised around the world with "Waterloo", the song that won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 for Sweden.
Following that landmark triumph, the band was in danger of being dismissed as a one-hit wonder. Subsequent releases were unjustly deprived of attention. A music program in Australia changed the group's fortunes. It started playing music clips of singles such as "Mamma Mia" and "S.O.S.". The songs caught on in Australia. "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" reached #1 there. "Mamma Mia" replaced it, enjoying a 10-week residency. That smash was followed directly by "S.O.S.".
Gradually, the rest of the planet gave ABBA a second look. The singles were hits in many territories. By 1976, the Swedish group was the biggest in the world, adding new hits such as "Fernando", "Dancing Queen" and "Money, Money, Money" to its canon.
The start of the 1980s brought more success, with hits that included "Super Trouper" and "The Winner Takes It All". Around this time, the couples within the line-up separated. "The Day Before You Came" was the final recording by ABBA, though the band never officially announced its termination.
Over the decades, lucrative offers have been offered to the members for a re-union. All of them were declined. Ulvaeus and Anderson have created musicals such as "Chess" and continue writing. Faltskog and Lyngstad have released solo albums.
The group's catalogue of upbeat and moving Europop has remained popular. Many of ABBA's songs have been included in the musical "Mamma Mia!" and the screen adaptation. The 2 films in the franchise have attracted the multi-talented Meryl Streep in a key role, supported by the likes of Pierce Brosnan, Julia Walters, Colin Firth, Christine Baranski, Cher and Andy Garcia.
In 2018, it was announced that ABBA had re-united in a recording studio and created new music. The release date of these highly anticipated tracks continually gets postponed. Two years on, the group's fans are still waiting to embrace the new songs from one of pop music's greatest groups.
