💥50 Personality Crisis

New York Dolls

PersonalityCrisis.jpgGlam rock dominated the UK charts in the early 1970s, led by acts that included Marc Bolan & T. Rex, Slade, The Sweet, Gary Glitter and David Bowie. In 1971, The New York Dolls formed in NYC. While the band drew from the sound of The Rolling Stones and glam rock, it was a seminal stepping stone in the evolution of punk rock. Building on a cult following, the group’s image provoked controversy. They cross-dressed and consumed drugs. Eventually, the New York Dolls signed with Mercury Records. The classic line-up consisted of guitarists Johnny Thunders, Sylvain Sylvain, drummer Jerry Nolan, bassist Arthur Kane and lead singer David Johansen. Todd Rundgren produced the self-titled debut album which spawned the single “Personality Crisis”. On stage, their vulgarity and drug-affected performances influenced countless other future punk musicians. Poor sales led to Mercury dropping the group. Malcolm McLaren was hired as new manager. In this role, he began honing his talent for using shock to gain publicity. He would later apply this experience successfully with The Sex Pistols, but it was ineffective with the New York Dolls. By 1975, the group was disintegrating. Although the Dolls only recorded 2 studio albums, they had an undeniable impact on groups that followed in their wake. The proto-punk group smashed doors open for the likes of Kiss, Blondie, The Sex Pistols, Japan, The Runaways, The Cult, Guns N’ Roses, Television and The Clash.
