100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1975
💥51 No Woman, No Cry
[Live]
Bob Marley & The Wailers
Bob Marley was not reggae’s first success; Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh and others had preceded him. What is undeniable, is that Marley soon became the figurehead for the genre. By 1974, he had already made his mark on popular music. Eric Clapton had scored a US #1 single with his cover of Marley’s “I Shot The Sheriff”. In 1974, reggae was finally embraced by the mainstream. Marley and his group The Wailers had previously recorded a studio version of “No Woman, No Cry” for the 1974 album ‘Natty Dread’. The true beauty of the song was revealed in a live context which saw the light of day on the 1975 ‘Live!’ album. Marley injected depth to its lyrics and message. The crowd ate it up, enhancing the power of the recording. Marley’s crossover was finally on the right trajectory. His brand of reggae with all its Rastafarian elements would now be embraced by the West. Among his signature songs are “Get Up, Stand Up”, “Is This Love”, “Buffalo Soldier” and “Redemption Song”. Stevie Wonder would pay tribute to the reggae legend with his 1980 hit “Master Blaster (Jammin’)”. Sadly, Marley passed away the following year, but his legacy lives on. Decades later, he is still reggae’s leading exponent.
