100
GREATEST LEAD SINGERS
35
🎤Brian Johnson
[Geordie; AC/DC]
Johnson had big shoes to fill following the death of AC/DC’s original lead vocalist Bon Scott. Few bands survive the loss of a dynamic frontman, but Johnson had the presence to lead the Australian hard rock group to even greater success.
34
🎤Lou Reed
[Velvet Underground]
Reed was an integral ingredient in the influential group Velvet Underground. He continued recording as a soloist until his death in 2013.
33
🎤Janis Joplin
[Big Brother & The Holding Company]
The group is remembered today because- for a time- its line-up included Janis Joplin. She went on to enjoy a solo career that was cut short by her death in 1970. She remains one of the definitive female rockers.
32
🎤Barry Gibb
[The Bee Gees]
As the eldest of the Gibb brothers, Barry led his siblings to immense international fame. Although Robin and Maurice also sang lead, it was Barry’s falsetto that made the 1970s their golden era.
31
🎤Annie Lennox
[Tourists; Eurythmics]
Alongside Dave Stewart, Lennox sang lead on the duo’s hits. The Eurythmics emerged just as music videos were ubiquitous and she was able to use the medium to maximum effect, as evidenced on the promos for “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” and “Love Is A Stranger”.
