GREATEST LEAD SINGERS

45

🎤Karen Carpenter

[The Carpenters]

Drummer Karen sang lead, harmonising with her brother Richard as a duo that best encapsulated the Adult Contemporary sound that dominated American music in the early 1970s. Her sweet and emotive voice raised songs such as “Solitaire”, “We’ve Only Just Begun”,  “Yesterday Once More” and “Superstar” to lofty heights.

🎤David Byrne

[Talking Heads]

Even though Talking Heads featured 4 high profile individuals in its line-up, but Byrne always was the main attraction.

🎤Darlene Love

[The Crystals]

Although most of her work with producer Phil Spector went uncredited, it was Love’s voice that made the recordings timeless. Among these girl group nuggets are: “He’s A Rebel”, “Da Doo Ron Ron” and “He’s Sure The Boy I Love”.

🎤Rod Stewart

[The Faces]

Before launching his more successful solo career, Stewart was lead singer for British group The Faces. His stint in the band is best remembered by the track “Stay With Me”.

🎤Axl Rose

[Guns N’ Roses]

Although Rose can be a divisive figure, there’s no denying the energy he injects into recordings by the group Guns N’ Roses. His range is demonstrated on the hit singles “Sweet Child O’ Mine”, “Patience” and “November Rain”.
