💥47 Soul Makossa

Manu Dibango

To the mainstream, “Soul Makossa” may be an obscure song, but it had a profound impact on the evolution of music. Manu Dibango was a musician from Cameroon. When he relocated to France, he began to merge jazz with African rhythms. His “Soul Makossa” was a recording which fused the Makossa style of brass and bass rhythms. It is often cited as the first disco recording. In 1973, the funky single charted on Billboard’s Pop and Soul charts, as well as the French and Australian Top 40s. This was before disco music became a fixture on the charts. The trailblazing track inspired Kool and the Gang’s “Jungle Boogie”. Later still, Michael Jackson referenced the song in his hit “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” (the ‘ma ma-se, ma ma-sa, ma ma-kossa’ hook was lifted straight off the Dibango track). This was used more recently in Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop The Music”. Dibango paved the way for the seminal disco hit singles such as “Never Can Say Goodbye” (Gloria Gaynor), “Rock The Boat” (Hues Corporation) and “Kung Fu Fighting” (Carl Douglas) that followed a year later.
