100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1979
💥66 London Calling
The Clash
“London Calling” remains a beacon moment for punk and British new wave. It was a rallying point for the youths that were awakened by the earlier discs from The Sex Pistols and those that followed. The Clash added reggae to the punk sound, which would later be applied by groups such as The Police and UB40. Lead vocalist Joe Strummer breathed life into the apocalyptic themes within the song’s lyrics. The Clash may have been punks, but they were far more adept than The Pistols had been. Each member of the group was an integral ingredient to the song’s impact; along with Strummer, this involved lead guitarist Mick Jones, bassist Paul Simonon and drummer Topper Headon. The Clash would continue to release key singles of the burgeoning punk scene, including “Train In Vain”, “Rock The Casbah” and “Should I Stay Or Should I Go”. Parent album ‘London Calling’ is regarded as one of the fundamental punk LPs. The group paved the way for other musicians that used punk as a springboard to establish their own rock credentials; The Jam, Blondie and (later) Green Day among them.
