100 SONGS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
1975
💥54 Bohemian Rhapsody
Queen
Today, Queen are one of the major groups in rock music’s pantheon. Back in 1975, they had not had a significant impact on the charts. The group’s sound was more in a heavy rock vein than crossover pop. The idea behind “Bohemian Rhapsody” had been on Freddie Mercury’s mind for years. It finally came together while the band was recording its ‘A Night At The Opera’ album. Kudos to Mercury for managing to make his vision into a reality. The final product was a lengthy song that switched genres, sounding like nothing that had come before. Queen had discarded the rule book. The single began with an a cappella intro before seamlessly moving in and out of genres such as opera, glam, heavy metal, prog and art rock. Queen co-produced the track with Roy Thomas Baker. The finished product was a 6-minute epic rock opera. Queen insisted that the track should be released as a single in its full version. The record label warned the group that radio would not play a song as lengthy as “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Queen persisted. The label conceded defeat as the unique single defied all the odds and reached #1 in Britain, some European territories, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. There’s never been a hit single like it, and it’s unlikely that we will see another of its ilk in the future. Credit must be given to the music video created for the single. The trailblazing promo ushered in a new age that would sprout in the 1980s with MTV.
