I’LL BE THERE
The Jackson 5
The group
had notched up 3 #1 singles, Motown bravely followed that trio of hits with a ballad.
Label chairman Berry Gordy Jr. was not a fan of the song at first, but after
some re-tweaking, did recognize its potential. Not only did “I’ll Be There” repeat
the chart peak of its predecessors, but the single became the brothers’ longest
running #1 disc. It ruled atop the Pop chart for 5 weeks and for 6 weeks on the
Soul listing in 1970. In Britain, the single peaked at #4. Along with Michael’s
lead vocal, Jermaine comes in on the bridge. The song was included on the
siblings’ ‘Third Album’. In 1993, Mariah Carey's remake (with Trey Lorenz) returned the hit to the chart summit.
