THE MOST INFLUENTIAL SONGS

(in chronological order)

This year’s Contest will see the 70th song declared a winner. Caffè Lattè lists all of the past winning entries and other songs that have had a lasting impact on the Eurovision Song Contest.

1988

In 1988, the Eurovision Song Contest helped launch the international careers of two talented vocalists. For the third time, competitors headed to Dublin, Ireland. Although initially 22 countries were slated for this Contest, Cyprus was disqualified for using a song that had vied for national selection 4 years earlier. The Irish presentation featured key innovations including a computerised scoreboard.

Celine Dion

Switzerland

The second Swiss Eurovision victory was achieved by a 19 year old French-Canadian, singing in French. Celine Dion’s entry’s title means “Don’t Leave Without Me”. Prior to the win, she was mostly known in Quebec, Canada and France. Dion used this triumph to begin recording her first English-language album ‘Unison’. She has gone on to great chart success with singles such as “Because You Loved Me”, “My Heart Will Go On” and “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now”. The Swiss entry beat the UK song “Go” by just one vote. This is also the last French song to win the first prize to date. The dominance of that language was over, replaced by songs performed in English.
