20 2 2
In 2022, Russia illegally invaded Ukraine. As a result, some countries successfully petitioned the EBU to ban Russia from participating at Eurovision. The 2022 Eurovision Song Contest was held in host city Turin, Italy.
Armenia and Montenegro returned and Australia sent its delegation to Italy with a decrease in concerns over the pandemic. This brought the number of competing countries back up to 40.
STEFANIA
Kalush Orchestra
Ukraine
In an overwhelming show of support for Ukraine in the wake of
the Russian invasion, the televoting public helped “Stefania” achieve a
remarkable score of 631 points. This was the first time since 1990 and 1991
that 2 consecutive winners were not sung in English. “Stefania” was the first
Ukrainian entry performed entirely in the national language. The win was Ukraine's third ESC victory.
GIVE THAT WOLF A BANANA
Subwoolfer
Norway
Finishing in tenth place was the tongue in cheek entry “Give That Wolf A Banana”. The song was so out there and humorous, that it was perfect for the Eurovision stage. Subwoolfer’s costume will live on as part of ESC folklore.
