This year’s Contest will see the 70th song declared a winner. Caffè Lattè lists all of the past winning entries and other songs that have had a lasting impact on the Eurovision Song Contest.

1990

Zagreb was the host city in the soon to vanish country Yugoslavia. The same 22 participants returned for the Contest. Europe was certainly evolving and this was reflected in many entries.

 

INSIEME: 1992

Toto Cutugno was a popular performer in Italy. His entry was a self-penned tribute to the European market due in 1992. “Insieme: 1992” translates into English as “Together: 1992”. He scooped up 149 points and brought Italy its second Eurovision victory.

 

WHITE AND BLACK BLUES

France

 

White and black blues.jpgFrance finished in second place with 132 points for its entry. Despite having an English title, “White And Black Blues” was performed in French by Joëlle Ursul. French legend Serge Gainsbourg wrote the song. He had previously created the winning song of 1965: “Poupée De Cire, Poupée De Son”. Ursull’s song was pertinent and she almost became the first black performer to win on the ESC stage.

Frei zu leben | Eurovision Song Contest Wiki | FandomThe Berlin Wall finally came down in 1989. East and West Germany were heading towards reunification and this was reflected in various ESC entries in 1990, including “Frei Zu Leben”. The German entry’s title means “Free To Live”. The duet finished ranked ninth.
