#419 TOWN CALLED MALICE The Jam
British mod punk band The Jam formed in 1975. Its pivotal member was the creative Paul Weller. While the group's success was mostly limited to the UK, their impact on British pop and rock music was immense. After signing with Polydor Records in 1977, the band began enjoying chart success. Beginning with "In the City" that same year, The Jam were regular visitors to the UK Top 40. A double A-sided single "Going Underground" backed with "Dreams of Children" became The Jam's 1st British #1. "Start!" did the same a few months later.
"Town Called Malice" was the most commercial sounding single from the group. Weller penned the hit; its Motown/ funk/ jazz beat peppered with his biting lyrics. Pete Wilson co-produced the track with the group. The song was included on the 1982 album 'The Gift'. The single was issued as 1 of the double A-sides with "Precious". The disc became The Jam's 3rd #1 in Britain. It was also a chart hit in Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
The Jam were now at the zenith of their popularity. In October 1982, Weller announced that the trio was splitting. "Beat Surrender" became The Jam's final #1. "... Malice" was a preview of the direction Weller would pursue musically with his next project: the duo The Style Council.
This
is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I
cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks.
Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have
universal appeal.
They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal
choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a
better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
2
new songs are added each day (every 12 hours) with a mid-week bonus
every Wednesday.
