#398 STAYIN' ALIVE Bee Gees
The hit film 'Saturday Night Fever' opens with John Travolta strutting down the streets of New York as Tony Manero. The music playing during that iconic scene is the classic song from the movie, "Stayin' Alive". Decades later, it has lost none of its power; still enticing feet to the dance floor. It remains 1 of the definitive disco hits.
The Bee Gees' global smash was written all 3 brothers for the box office film's soundtrack. The siblings co-produced it with Karl Richardson and Albhy Galuten. The song was recorded in France, but was remixed and had overdubs added in Miami, Florida. "Stayin' Alive" was initially entitled
"Saturday Night, Saturday Night". The Gibbs decided to change its name
as they felt there were already too many songs about Saturday nights.
The soundtrack was unleashed in 1977. "Stayin' Alive" was released as the 2nd single from the '... Fever' soundtrack LP. It reached #1 in the US in 1978. Their younger brother Andy Gibb replaced the song at the top a month later. He was knocked off by follow-up hit "Night Fever" by The Bee Gees which 8 weeks later, was toppled by another song penned by the trio: Yvonne Elliman's "If I Can't Have You". The Bee Gees, and Barry in particular, was the hottest act on the world's charts and spearheading the revamped disco craze at this time.
"Stayin' Alive" also topped the charts in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Mexico. It peaked at #4 in Britain. Its popularity helped make the '... Fever' soundtrack the all-time best selling album - a record it maintained until Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' album eclipsed its success.
This
is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I
cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks.
Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have
universal appeal.
They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal
choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a
better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
2
new songs are added each day (every 12 hours) with a mid-week bonus
every Wednesday.
