#438 MESSAGE TO MY GIRL Split Enz
Split Enz formed in Auckland in 1972. By 1977, its line-up consisted of founding member Tim Finn, Eddie Rayner, Noel Crombie, Nigel Griggs and Malcolm Green. Tim's brother Neil Finn joined after the departure of another founder, Phil Judd. The hit-making line-up was now poised to make inroads beyond New Zealand. The group aimed to conquer Australia. Beginning with "Late Last Night", the band improved their chances of success. "My Mistake" and "I See Red" both peaked at #15. As the '80s dawned, Split Enz issued "I Got You". The single not only reached #1 in New Zealand, but Australia too. The group was now a consistent chart force in both territories. That hit record also charted in the UK and Canada.
In 1983, Split Enz released the ballad "Message to my Girl". Neil Finn penned the track which was included on the group's 'Conflicting Emotions' LP. Hugh Padgham co-produced it with Rayner. The love song was recorded at Paradise Studios in Sydney, Australia. The disc reached #26 in New Zealand and #6 in Australia.
By this time, Tim's songwriting was taking 2nd place, eclipsed by Neil's contributions to the group's songbook. Tim quit and Neil was now the group leader. In 1984 the band released 'See Ya Round'. The following year, Split Enz broke up.
Neil and later Enz recruit Paul Hester formed the internationally successful Crowded House. Tim was a member of this new group for some time as well as launching a solo career. Judd, Crombie and Griggs formed a group named Schnell Fenster. Split Enz has re-united from time to time.
This
is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I
cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks.
Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have
universal appeal.
They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal
choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a
better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
2
new songs are added each day (every 12 hours) with a mid-week bonus
every Wednesday.
