CAFFE` LATTE` TOP 2000 TRACKS
#107 SIR DUKE Stevie Wonder
The hit song "Sir Duke" was Stevie Wonder's tribute to a group of performers that the talented musician regarded as influential. Its title referred to Duke Ellington, who had died in 1974, 2 years prior to the completion of Wonder's 'Songs in the Key of Life', which contained the track. Along with honouring the jazz legend, the song pays tribute to Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.
'... Key Of Life' was finally released in 1976. Its 1st single was "I Wish". That R&B Chart #1 was followed 4 months later by "Sir Duke". Wonder's composition was also produced by the artist. Michael Sembello, who performed lead guitar on the cut, would score his own #1 hit with "Maniac" in the 1980s (from the 'Flashdance' soundtrack).
The single reached #1 Pop and R&B in the USA and peaked at #2 in Britain. On the American Adult Contemporary Chart, the song climbed to #3. The upbeat, jazz and swing- flavoured track remains a live favourite.
This
is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I
cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks.
Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have
universal appeal.
They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal
choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a
better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
A
new song from the Top 2000 is added each day, while another 2 are also
included from positions 1501-2000 daily. Check back here every 12 hours
for
an update of the 2000.
