CAFFE` LATTE` TOP 2000 TRACKS

#117 I'M GONNA MAKE YOU LOVE ME Diana Ross & the Supremes and The Temptations
In 1968, Motown's biggest girl group combined forces with the label's biggest boy band for the 'Diana Ross & The Supremes Join The Temptations' album. The major hit single from this collaborative project was the duet "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me".
While this version is the best known, it was not the original. The song's genesis remains uncertain, with Kenneth Gamble and Jerry Ross definitely involved, but inconsistencies exist with whether or not there was a 3rd contributor. Motown credited Leon Huff as a co-writer. Earlier versions of the song list Jerry Williams. The original version was released by Dee Dee Warwick in 1966. Madeline Bell issued a remake 2 years later. Both versions fared well on the US R&B Chart. When The Supremes and The Temptations covered the song, it became an even bigger smash hit.
At the time, both groups were undergoing some upheaval. Florence Ballard had been ousted from The Supremes and replaced by Cindy Birdsong. The situation was mirrored at the Temptations' camp, where the group was readjusting after the departure of key member David Ruffin and the recruitment of Dennis Edwards.
Frank Wilson and Nickolas Ashford produced the successful collaboration. Lead vocal duties on "I'm Gonna Make You..." were handled by Eddie Kendricks and Diana Ross. Otis Williams' voice was used for the spoken segment.
The single reached #2 on the US Pop and R&B charts. In Britain, the duet peaked at #3. On the Australian Top 40, the disc climbed to #14. Its success no doubt encouraged Motown to release a 2nd collaboration between the 2 groups:"I'll Try Something New" in the following year. A 3rd, entitled "The Weight", became their 3rd collaboration to chart in America.
Later that year, Ross quit The Supremes to launch her solo career. Jean Terrell became a new member in 1970 and the female trio scored respectable hit singles. The group would try a similar joint venture with The Four Tops in 1970. Ross enjoyed greater success in her own right, including #1 singles.
The Temptations bid farewell to Kendricks and Paul Williams in 1971 but continued with various new recruits until Otis Williams was the sole remaining founding member. 2010 saw the male vocal group release a new album entitled 'Still Here'.

This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
A new song from the Top 200 is added each day, while another 2 are also included from positions 1501-2000 daily. Check back here every 12 hours for an update of the 2000.
