THE TOP 100
#2 NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS
BARBRA STREISAND
(1983)
Writers: Michel Legrand; Alan & Marilyn Bergman
"No Matter What Happens" is featured in the film 'Yentl', at the moment when the title character has reached a final crossroad. After passing herself off as a male in in order to gain access to the world of scholars, Yentl can no longer deny the turning point she finds herself in. While studying at the yeshiva, Yentl has fallen in love with a fellow scholar. He is male and unaware that his friend is really a woman. It is now time for Yentl to reveal her secret to the man she loves.
French composer MIchel Legrand created the music for "No Matter What Happens". Streisand returned to the bountiful songbook of frequent songwriting team, (married couple) lyricists Alan & Marilyn Bergman. The 'Yentl' soundtrack contains 2 variations of the climactic song: 1 used in the motion picture and another known as the "studio version".
When I interviewed the Bergmans in 2012 about "No Matter...", we discussed how the song is relatable from a variety of perspectives. They explained: "we understood that when we wrote it... that it had a kind of anthemic quality". Marilyn continued: "... and that it spoke for a lot of people that felt outside of mainstream society". She added: "it spoke to the need for people to be recognized, and to be true to themselves and come out of the shadow".
