60 YEARS OF
ROCK
(1955-2015)
1955
There had been rock 'n roll songs before "Rock Around The Clock", but its appearance at #1 on the Billboard chart heralded a new era: rock was finally mainstream. This was largely due to the song being featured in the movie 'Blackboard Jungle'. Bill Haley & His Comets' version was a remake and many dismissed its chart run as a novelty, but the genre was here to stay. In time, the mellow ballads aimed squarely at parents would give way to a cashed-up younger generation. Rock 'n roll was their sound. Bringing together elements of country, folk, rhythm and blues, rock music would dominate popular music and spawn many offshoots.
