THE TOP 100
#3 I NEED YOU TO TURN TO
ELTON JOHN
(1970)
Writers: Bernie Taupin & Elton John
Elton John's self-ttled album proved to be his breakthrough LP thanks tp the inclusion of the unforgettable 1st hit, "Your Song". With such a classic opening the disc, it's easy to overlook other gems. "I Need You To Turn To" immediately follows "Your Song" on the album.
The beautiful and understated track features John playing the harpsichord instead of his usual instrument, the piano. Renowned musician Skaila Kanga complements the ballad on the harp. Paul Buckmaster's arrangement infuses the recording with a mood that is both timeless and classical. Another major strength is the minimalism in the lyrics. Here, Bernie Taupin's songwriting has maintained a simplicity that adds authenticity and sensitivity to the track. The vulnerability oozes out of every line. John's vocal delivery is gentle and tender, perfectly suiting the lyrics. Gus Dudgeon skilfully handled production.
The deluxe edition of 'Elton John' features an alternative version of "I Need You To Turn To". This take is a piano demo with just John singing and playing his keyboard. The performer introduced later fans to the delicate beauty of the song when he included it on his tour with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. The 'Live Across Australia' album captured 1 show in Sydney with the M.S.O. accompanying John and his regular touring band. A live version of the song is included on the 1987 album.
