#6
NE PARTEZ PAS SANS MOI
CELINE DION
Switzerland- 1988
Celine Dion from Quebec,
Canada represented Switzerland with the French song “Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi”
which translates as “do not leave without me”. Her vocal style impressed enough people to
make the Swiss entry the favourite before the contest commenced in Dublin. Not
even her ridiculous costume detracted from her singing ability. Dion became 1
of the leading figures in popular music a few years after her victory at
Eurovision. What is less known is that she only won by 1 point! Dion attracted massive sales when she began recording in English. Eurovision proved to be an effective means to expose her to a non-French speaking audience. Switzerland had only won once before, back in 1956 with the 1st winning song "Refrain". Dion's song remains the last winning entry sung in French.
