Each year, the Eurovision Song Contest pits nations against each other, vying for a victory. Since 1956, the ESC has thrown up several unforgettable winning entries, but what about the songs that came close but finished in second place? Caffé Latté ranks 40 of the past 62 runners-up that still deserve special recognition.

The UK finished in second place for the 15th time with Imaani's song. She was the first black singer to represent the United Kingdom.

The beautiful "Lane Moje" was performed in Serbian. Its title translates as "My darling".

Cyprus came close to securing its first ever win at Eurovision with "Fuego" (Fire). The upbeat song lost to Netta's "Toy" last year.

DIMA BILAN
RUSSIA / 2006
Dima Bilan almost brought the Eurovision trophy home to Russia in 2006. Although he finished second, the singer returned to represent his country again 2 years later. In 2008, Bilan was victorious, winning with "Believe".

In the years when countries had to sing in their national language(s), Ireland and the UK had an obvious advantage at Eurovision. In 1975, the Irish and UK entries finished (again) in 1st and 2nd positions respectively.
