EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 2019
THE HISTORY & STATISTICS
English remains the dominant language
at Eurovision and this is reflected in the total number of winning songs
performed in that language. Had the language rule restricting countries to sing
in their national language/s never been applied, the total most likely would
have been even higher. This restriction existed during 2 periods: 1966-72 and
1978-98. It's worth noting that a Swedish entry sung in English was the first victor following the lifting of that rule in time for the 1999 contest.
Since 1999, only 2 winners have been
performed in a language other than English: “Molitva” and “Amar Pelos Dois”.
Overall, the most represented
languages among the winning songs are:
English (30)
French (14)
Dutch & Hebrew (3)
