BARBRA STREISAND
-HER IOO MOST ESSENTIAL SONGS-
Barbra Streisand is one of the most celebrated performers, earning Emmy, Grammy, Academy and Tony Awards in a career spanning six decades. This is a countdown of her 100 finest recordings from 1963 to the present day.
100
DON’T LIE TO ME
Streisand has championed political causes, closely aligned with the Democrats’ goals for many decades. This song, a single lifted off her 2018 album release ‘Walls’, was inspired by the Trump administration in the era of “fake news”.
99
PRISONER
The title song from the 1978 film 'The Eyes Of Laura Mars' which starred Faye Dunaway and Tommy Lee Jones.
98
THE LOVE INSIDE
Barry Gibb, who penned “The Love Inside”, almost turned down the opportunity to create the ‘Guilty’ album project. He had heard that Barbra Streisand was difficult to work with. After encouragement from Neil Diamond (who had previously recorded the duet “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” with her), Gibb agreed. ‘Guilty’ became Streisand’s best selling album to date.
97
I HAVE DREAMED / WE KISS IN A SHADOW/ SOMETHING WONDERFUL
A medley of songs from the musical “The King And I” included on ‘The Broadway Album’.
96
YOU’RE THE TOP
Streisand covered the Cole Porter tune "You're The Top" for the film ‘What’s Up, Doc?’. The comedy saw her co-star with Ryan O’Neal. The latter is also heard on this remake.
95
NIGHT OF MY LIFE
Barry Gibb was back at the helm for the 2005 album ‘Guilty Pleasures’, a sequel of sorts to her 1980 ‘Guilty’ hit LP. “Night Of My Life” was its most upbeat track.
94
TELL HIM
Celine Dion, a big
fan of Streisand, recorded this duet with the legendary singer. It appeared on both
Barbra’s ‘Higher Ground’ and the Canadian vocalist’s ‘Let’s Talk About Love’
albums. The song was written and produced by David Foster and Walter Afanasieff
with lyrics contributed by Linda Thompson. Streisand cut her vocals in Los Angeles. Dion sang her part a few days later in New York.
93
I LOVED YOU
Few recording artists master as wide an array of genres as Barbra Streisand has over several decades. In 1976, she released ‘Classical Barbra’, on which she sings in Latin, French, German, Italian and (in the case of “I Loved You”) in English.
92
THE ISLAND
Frequent Streisand collaborators Alan & Marilyn Bergman wrote English lyrics to the Brazilian tune “Começar de Novo” (Once And Again) by Ivan Lins and Vitor Martins. Streisand recorded it in 1999 for her ‘A Love Like Ours’ album. The Bergmans re-tweaked the lyrics for her version. This album was inspired by the new man in her life: husband James Brolin.
91
BEFORE THE PARADE PASSES BY
In 1969, Streisand starred in the title role in the musical motion picture ‘Hello, Dolly!’ Her co-stars included Louis Armstrong, Walter Matthau and Michael Crawford.
