A
BOY NAMED SUE
JOHNNY
CASH
The
story in this song deals with a young man condemned to a life of ridicule by an
absent father who named him Sue. He grows up hating his father and is determined
to locate him and seek revenge. One day, the son recognizes the father who left
when he was three years old. Years of mockery over his name Sue had hardened
the young man. He knew how to defend himself after years of fighting. As the
son approaches his father with the intent to kill him, the parent explains why
he named the boy Sue. The father knew he would not be around. Motivated by
tough love, he gave his son a girl’s name in order to toughen him up. They both
dropped their gun and the son realized that his father had tried to do right by
him after all.
