THE
BALLAD OF LUCY JORDAN
MARIANNE
FAITHFUL
According
to Marianne Faithful’s cover of this song, the protagonist’s mental faculties
are deteriorating. One day, the housewife gets on to a rooftop. A crowd
gathers. An ambulance arrives as one officer takes her hand and brings her
safely back down. The long white car referred to in the lyrics is the ambulance
which will take her to a hospital where she will receive the care she needs. By
the song’s end, the housewife is no longer living in reality. In her mind, she
is finally living out her fantasy: driving through the streets of Paris in an
open car.
