At the start of the song, the lyrics appear to be optimistic: a man on his way back to his hometown after a lengthy absence. He is looking forward to seeing the familiar places of his childhood as well as his family and his beloved Mary. As the song progresses, he wakes from his dream. We discover the protagonist is incarcerated. The next day he is due to be executed. His loved ones will gather for his burial under the green, green grass of his old hometown.
