THE
NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT IN GEORGIA
VICKI
LAWRENCE
This
song deals with “Brother”, returning to his hometown following a fortnight away.
Stopping off at a bar, he is informed by Andy that his wife has been
unfaithful. His best friend explains that she has been seeing a man named Seth in his absence. Brother
is furious to hear that even Andy has slept with his spouse. He heads home.
Andy rushes home too, concerned for his safety. Brother’s wife is not home. He
grabs his deceased father’s gun and makes his way to Andy’s residence. On the
way, Brother notices footprints. They are too small to belong to Andy. Peering
through the back door, he discovers Andy’s lifeless body in a pool of blood.
The police are nearby and Brother fires his gun to grab their attention.
Suddenly, he finds himself wrongly accused of murdering Andy. He is convicted
and hanged. As the song nears its end, it is revealed that the footprints
belonged to Brother’s sister. She had shot Andy. Furthermore, his wife was
missing because she had killed her too and hidden the corpse.
