THE MOST INFLUENTIAL SONGS
(in chronological order)
This year’s Contest will see the 70th song declared a winner. Caffè Lattè lists all of the past winning entries and other songs that have had a lasting impact on the Eurovision Song Contest.
1971
The success of “All Kinds Of Everything” as a single returned credibility to the Eurovision Song Contest. Furthermore, the show itself had been received favourably, reigniting enthusiasm for the ESC. This resulted in the return of Austria after a 2-year absence as well as the end of the boycott from Sweden, Norway, Finland and Portugal. The debut of Malta brought the number of participants up to 18. Eurovision was finally looking healthy again as proceedings began in Dublin, Ireland.
UN BANC, UN ARBRE, UNE RUE
Severine
Monaco
Severine was a French woman who agreed to represent the principality of Monaco. Her song’s title means “A Bench, A Tree, A Road”. It became yet another winning song performed in French, but a first win for Monaco. The principality first participated back in 1959 (where it finished in last place).
LES ILLUSION DE NOS VINGT ANS
Peter, Sue & Marc
Switzerland
A rule change implemented for the 1971 Contest was that groups would be permitted to perform. A limit of 6 persons would be allowed on stage. Peter, Sue & Marc became the first group to perform at Eurovision. It is worth noting that Sweden was also represented by a group: The Family Four. The Swiss entry was the fourth song heard on the night. Sweden performed later. In the end, the Swiss group finished in 12th place. The Swedes landed in equal sixth position. Another Swedish group would – in a few years – have a major impact on the Eurovision Song Contest.
