THE MOST INFLUENTIAL SONGS
(in chronological order)
This year’s Contest will see the 70th song declared a winner. Caffè Lattè has ranked all of the past winning entries and other songs that have had a lasting impact on the Eurovision Song Contest.
1957
The second Eurovision Song Contest made changes to the original concept. Each participating country was represented by only one song; a tradition that has continued to the present day. Another new rule that still stands is that nations cannot vote for their own entry. Denmark and Austria had missed the deadline for 1956, but debuted the following year. The United Kingdom was also welcomed into the ESC family.
NET ALS TOEN Corry Brokken
Netherlands
The Dutch entry secured a strong victory with 31 points, way ahead
of the French runner-up which had received a score of 17. This year’s Contest
was held in Frankfurt, Germany. Singer Corry Brokken had represented The Netherlands the previous year.

Birthe Wike & Gustav Winckler

Eurovision in its infancy remained a very respectable and conservative event. Over the decades, many stunts have been incorporated. The first proved to be scandalous in 1957. Audiences were offended when the Danish performers engaged in a kiss that lasted for 11 seconds! The controversial stunt must not have alienated too many in the juries given that the song finished third.
