THE MOST INFLUENTIAL SONGS
(in chronological order)
This year’s Contest will see the 70th song declared a winner. Caffè Lattè lists all of the past winning entries and other songs that have had a lasting impact on the Eurovision Song Contest.
1963
The United Kingdom had yet to win the Contest, but it hosted Eurovision for a second time in 1963. The same 16 participants that had competed in 1961 and 1962 all returned. Controversy and mystery still lingers from this edition of the ESC. There was also a switch from 10 to 20 jurors for each nation, before returning to the original number again. Norway had not been notified and this caused an upset when its jury votes were announced. Other issues with scores plagued the night and may have affected the eventual outcome.
DANSEVISE Grethe & Jørgen Ingmann
Denmark
The Danes claimed the first Scandinavian victory and beat Switzerland by just 2 points in 1963. This pushed the UK down to fourth place. Copenhagen was the host city for Eurovision the following year.
VIELLEICHT GESCHIEHT EIN WUNDER
Carmela Corren
Austria
The first Israeli performer at Eurovision represented Austria. Years later, Israel would be welcomed into the ESC fold in its own right. Corren’s entry is also significant for beginning in German before switching to English. This is a strategy that would be copied numerous times. Some subsequent entries later incorporated more than 2 languages in the same song. Austria finished seventh. The Austrian song's title means "Maybe A Miracle Will Happen".
A FORCE DE PRIER Nana Mouskouri
Luxembourg
Greek singer Nana Mouskouri raised her profile with her appearance at Eurovision. She performed a French song which gave Luxembourg an 8th place. Its title means "By Persistently Praying". She would go on to become a global success. Greece would also join the Eurovision family in the next decade.
