EUROVISION

1956-2022

THE MOST INFLUENTIAL SONGS

(in chronological order)

This year’s Contest will see the 70th song declared a winner. Caffè Lattè lists all of the past winning entries and other songs that have had a lasting impact on the Eurovision Song Contest.

1981

Despite the presence of 20 competing countries at the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest, 2 countries were absent from the previous year’s event. Morocco objected to the participation of Israel and was no doubt displeased with the poor reception given to its 1980 entry. Italy was also convinced that its own entries were not faring as well as they deserved, so withdrew. Israel returned, as did Yugoslavia. Cyprus debuted and gained a sixth place outcome. Eurovision was back in Dublin, Ireland for the second time.

The United Kingdom snatched a fourth victory at Eurovision with the infectious pop hit “Making Your Mind Up” performed by Bucks Fizz. This was one of the best-selling singles to have won the Contest. The group- formed especially for the Contest- would go on to place more singles on charts around the world.

JOHNNY BLUE Lena Valaitis

Germany

Lena Valaitis – Johnny Blue (1981, Vinyl) - DiscogsThe last 3 German entries were co-written by Ralph Siegel and Bernd Meinunger: “Dschingis Khan” finished fourth in 1979; “Theater” was the runner-up the following year; “Johnny Blue” repeated that success in 1981.
