#371 AUTOMATIC Pointer Sisters
Ruth Pointer is featured performing lead vocals on The Pointer Sisters' dance hit "Automatic". During an interview with her, I asked how she and her sisters ended up recording it. "That was like a little surprise", she explained. The trio, taking a break from recording, was listening to tapes of songs that had been pitched to them. They started playing the demo for "Automatic" and were impressed. They wondered: "why is it in the reject pile?" They asked their producer Richard Perry who explained he didn't think the sisters would want to record it. According to Ruth, he asked them: "Who's going to sing that low part? I said: I'll do the low part!"
"Automatic" was written by Brock Walsh and Mark Goldenberg. Perry's production made it a trendsetting 80s dance record. The track was included on the siblings' 1983 album 'Break Out'. The single charted in 1984 and peaked at #5 in America, 2 in Britain and 1 in Ireland.

This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice.
