#377 SIGN YOUR NAME Terence Trent D'Arby
New Yorker Terence Trent D'Arby was born in 1962. While serving in Germany for the US army, he joined a funk group named Touch. Following his military stint, D'Arby relocated to London and actively pursued a musical career. A demo tape was made and the young singer was signed up by CBS Records. In 1987, he broke through with the single "If You Let Me Stay". The disc peaked at #7 in Britain. The follow-up, "Wishing Well", fared even better- reaching #1 in the US. 
"Sign Your Name" charted in 1988 and was the 4th track lifted off his lauded 1977 debut album, 'Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby'. The smooth song was written by the singer and he co-produced the track with Martyn Ware. The latter was a member of British group Heaven 17. The single peaked at #2 in the UK, 3 in Australia and 4 in America. 
After such a spectacular debut, D'Arby was being compared to Prince. The singer was more adventurous on his sophomore release 'Neither Fish Nor Flesh', but this alienated many. In 1993, he returned with a well received album, 'Symphony or Damn'. His next releases attracted little attention and D'Arby has unfortunately never managed to score a hit single since 1995. He has, however, continued recording. His most recent release was 2003's 'Wildcard!'. Around that time, D'Arby had changed his name legally to Sananda Maitreya.

This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. Some are obscure; others were worldwide hits or have universal appeal. They aren't always the most famous or popular, but simply a personal choice. I have excluded songs from the last few years in order to get a better idea of a song's lasting impression. I hope you find some new tracks to love, or re-discover some past favourites.
