#185 LOVE IS IN CONTROL (FINGER ON THE TRIGGER) Donna Summer
By 1982, Donna Summer had intentionally distanced herself from disco. It was no radical move; the genre had lost its momentum and Summer had made a point of incorporating other musical styles on her 70s albums, even if everyone focused on her dance hits. The lead single off her self-titled album that year found her without Giorgio Moroder. Her new producer was Quincy Jones. While Moroder had shaped Summer's disco output, 'Q' was then 1 of the hottest producers, largely due to his work on Michael Jackson's 'Off the Wall' LP. He co-wrote "Love is in Control" with Rod Temperton and Merria Ross.
The session players on the single included Greg Phillinganes on synthesizer, Michael Sembello (of "Maniac" fame) on guitar, Paulinho da Costa on percussion, Jerry Hey on horns, Among the  background vocalists were James Ingram and Howard Hewett.
"Love is in Control" fared well on the charts, ensuring Summer a successful transition from her traditional dance style. The new song was funky and R&B flavoured. On the charts, it reached #10 in America. It also made the Top 10 in Canada and Europe. In the UK, the disc peaked at #18. On the Australian chart, it climbed to #17.

NEW RELEASE OF THE MONTH
AUGUST 2014
LAURA MVULAWITH THE METROPOLE ORKEST
It's tragic that 2 years on from her breakthrough, Laura Mvula isn't a household name all over the world. The singer/songwriter has a vocal style that is a unique gift. Her 2014 release, which sees Mvula re-recording the songs from her 2013 album 'Sing to the Moon' in an orchestral context, provides us with further proof of her skill. It was recorded at Abbey Road studios.
Opening track "Make Me Lovely" is just that: a lovely re-interpretation. Mvula evokes memories of Shirley Bassey's classy and classic 007 title songs. "Like The Morning Dew" will leave you in awe of her talent. "Can't Live With The World" is so delicate, you are too afraid it will shatter in pieces as you play it. "Sing to the Moon" is another track that benefits from its orchestral makeover. "Is There Anybody Out There" is beautifully arranged and recalls Bjork. "Flying Without You" is another stand-out track; as is "She".
"Father, Father" changes the mood slightly and is gorgeous in its simplicity. So consistently well executed are the songs on is this album, that a track as sweet as "I Don't Know What The Weather Will Be" becomes unspectacular by comparison.
"Green Garden" is more cheerful and upbeat while maintaining its basic charm. "Diamonds" slows things down and is enchanting. The new album concludes with the hit single "That's Alright". Again, the orchestra enhances the track, but never becomes indulgent or excessive. The new arrangements lovingly handle the songs and never overshadow their original beauty. Each track is carefully embellished with the orchestral enhancement. Mvula's album is a true aural delight to behold. If you are unaware of Mvula, this is an excellent opportunity to make her acquaintance.

#186 TOO SHY TO SAY Diana Ross
The ballad "Too Shy To Say" was included on Stevie Wonder's 1974 album 'Fulfillingness' First Finale'. Diana Ross recorded her remake for her 1977 LP 'Baby It's Me'. She approaches the love song with a gentler and understated vocal. Richard Perry produced the cut.

This is a list made up of the songs I enjoy the most, ranked in order of preference: the higher we go, the more I cherish them. Some were released as singles, others as album tracks. #1528 LEAVING ME NOW Level 42

#187 STONEY END Bsrbra Streisand
As well as milking many a standard in her repertoire, Barbra Streisand has achieved success by covering classics from the stage and screen. In between, she has recorded albums which have kept her relevant. Among these projects are her collaboration with the Bee Gees ('Guilty'), her disco tracks and the modern remakes of songs by the likes of John Lennon, David Bowie, Paul Simon and- in the case of "Stoney End"- Laura Nyro.
The singer/ songwriter released an album in 1967 entitled 'More Than A New Discovery'. While the LP failed to attract significant sales for Nyro, various tracks would become hits in the hands of others. Blood, Sweat and Tears scored success with "And When I Die". The Fifth Dimension reached #1 in the USA with her "Wedding Bell Blues". Streisand's cover of "Stoney End" was the title track of the actress/ singer's 1971 album. Peggy Lipton had released a version of it as a single in 1968.
Richard Perry produced 'Stoney End'. The title track sees Streisand blend pop/ rock with gospel. The single peaked at #6 Pop and 2 Adult Contemporary in the US and reached #5 in Canada. In the UK, it climbed to #27.
Streisand also covered Nyro's "Time and Love" on the 'Stoney End' album. Sadly, fellow New Yorker Nyro passed away in 1997, only a few months before her 50th birthday, of ovarian cancer. She is still a respected songwriter.

#189 THE LOOK OF LOVE Dusty Springfield
1967 saw the release of the film 'Casino Royale'. This was a spoof revolving around the spy James Bond and is not an Eon-released film. Dusty Springfield's reading of "The Look Of Love" is 1 of its few redeeming features.
The memorable song delivers a cool '60s feel to the film, thanks largely to the arrangement and Springfield's unique vocal style. Burt Bacharach had been asked to score the film. He composed "The Look Of Love". Lyrics were written by his regular songwriting partner at the time, Hal David. Phil Ramone handled its production.
"The Look..." was nominated for Best Original Song at the 1968 Academy Awards. It was beaten by "Talk to the Animals" from 'Doctor Dolittle'. Released as a single, the disc reached the Top 40 in the USA and Canada. In the UK, "The Look..." was the B-side for Springfield's "Give Me Time", which peaked at #24 in 1967. While the film was unspectacular, this song has proven to be timeless.

#190 DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING? 'Les Miserables' World Cast
'The Complete Symphonic Recording', featuring a world cast made up of members from a variety of stage productions of the timeless musical 'Les Miserables', was unleashed in 1988. The musical was created by Alain Boubil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, based on Victor Hugo's classic novel. Lyrics were penned by Herbert Kretzmer to Schonberg's music. "Do You Hear The People Sing?" is a stirring show-stopper from the show.
The version on this recording features Australian Anthony Warlow as Enjolras, 1 of the musical's pivotal characters. The song occupies a key scene in the production, before the climactic moments at the barricade. In the film adaptation, the song was moved to its closing scene.

#191 CHAIN REACTION Diana Ross
In 1985, Diana Ross released her 'Eaten Alive' album, a project which contained 10 new songs that members of The Bee Gees were involved in writing. All 3 brothers had written "Chain Reaction", but were hesitant to suggest it for the vocalist, fearing it was too reminiscent of her Supremes discs for Motown.
As the album was being finalised, Ross wanted 1 more song to complete the LP. The Gibb brothers finally offered "Chain Reaction" to her. The track was cut, with Barry Gibb co-producing with Karl Richardson and Albhy Galuten. Ross was pleased with the finished product.
"Chain Reaction" was issued as the 2nd single from the album. The song reached #1 in Britain, Australia and Ireland. Curiously, the single struggled on the US chart, where it peaked at #66. In 2001, Steps covered the song and climbed to #2 in the UK.

#193 WHERE IS THE LOVE? Black Eyed Peas featuring Justin Timberlake
The Black Eyed Peas formed in 1995. Will. i. am and apl.de.ap met while in high school and had worked as part of a breakdancing crew. They decided to pursue musical ambitions and, after recruiting Taboo, evolved into The Black Eyed Peas. After trying a variety of female vocalists, the group added Fergie to the lineup. Around this time, the BEP's music was heading in a more accessible direction. Their 1st album with Fergie was released in 2003. 'Elephunk' contained the track "Where is the Love?".
For this new song, the BEP invited Justin Timberlake to be a guest vocalist. It was a largely uncredited collaboration so as not to compete with the soloist's own singles at the time. The track was written by will.i.am (Will Adams), Timberlake, Taboo (Jaime Gomez), apl,de.ap (Allen Pineda), Printz Board, Michael Fratantuno, George Pajon Jr and J. Curtis. The track was produced by will.i.am with Ron Fair.
"Where..." became the "What's Going On" of the first decade of the 21st century. It struck a chord all over the world, reaching #1 in the US, UK, Australia, Europe and New Zealand in 2003. This smash initiated a string of hits that continues to this day. Subsequent chart successes included: "Shut Up", "Don't Phunk With My Heart", "My Humps", "Boom Boom Pow", "The Time (Dirty Bit)" and "I Gotta Feeling.

#194 '39 Queen
The track "'39" was featured on Queen's 'A Night at the Opera' album. That LP was dropped in 1975. Its success worldwide was buoyed by the inclusion of the epic hit "Bohemian Rhapsody". "'39" was 1 of the tracks which revealed another dimension of the British rock group.
Lead guitarist Brian May wrote the song. He also sings the lead vocal. John Deacon performed double bass on "'39". Production was handled by the group and Roy Thomas Baker. The beauty of this track lies in its simplicity. "'39" was the B-side for the single "You're My Best Friend".

#195 WHEN IN ROME (I DO AS THE ROMANS DO) Barbra Streisand
"When In Rome (I Do As The Romans Do)" was 1 of the fruits of the stormy songwriting partnership between Cy Coleman and Caroline Leigh. Barbra Streisand popularized their composition by including it on her 4th album, 'People', in 1964. Her rendition benefits from a quality arrangement from Peter Matz and Robert Mersey's production. Streisand bursts into some spoken lines in Italian, as she waxes about the men of Italy.
Coleman - who was born Seymour Kaufman - also wrote "Witchcraft", a standout of the Frank Sinatra songbook and another collaboration with Leigh. His compositions have also been recorded by the likes of Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., Peggy Lee and Tony Bennett. Together, Coleman and Leigh also co-wrote "Young At Heart", "Firefly" and "The Best Is Yet To Come". Leigh passed away in 1983. Coleman died in 2004.
