ABBATHE 40 MOST IMPORTANT SONGS
3 WATERLOO
Writers: Benny Andersson / Bjorn Ulvaeus / Stig Anderson
ABBA's "Waterloo" remains the best known winner of the Eurovision Song Contest and it is the strongest counter-argument against all the derision the annual event attracts. At the end of the day, the contest launched one of the most successful groups in pop music history. The song collected the top prize on 6 April, 1974. Its working title had been "Honey Pie" but manager Stig Anderson came up with the idea of Napoleon's historic battle as a metaphor to a woman capitulating to an admirer's perseverance.
"Waterloo" charted in numerous territories following its victory in Brighton, England. The single reached the top in Europe, Britain and South Africa. It even made the Top 40 in countries that were largely unaware of Eurovision, such as Australia and America.
