THE 200
MOST ESSENTIAL
MOVIE SONGS
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
Here are some songs you might have expected
to find included among the Essential 200 Movie Songs, but – for various
reasons- were ineligible…
Today’s list features songs (in random order) that
were standout moments in their respective films. These movie songs were
ineligible for various reasons.
IT MUST HAVE BEEN LOVE
Roxette
(‘Pretty Woman’- 1990)
While we associate "It Must Have Been Love" with the romantic comedy 'Pretty Woman', Roxette had recorded an earlier attempt of the ballad. In 1987, the Swedish duo released a seasonal single entitled "It Must Have Been Love (Christmas For the Broken Hearted)". It was a local hit. Roxette did not alter the song too much for the re-recording which reached #1 in America and Australia 3 years later, thanks to the Richard Gere & Julia Roberts hit film.
HEY GOLDMEMBER
Beyoncé
(‘Austin Powers In Goldmember’- 2000)
Beyoncé co-starred with Mike Meyers in the spy comedy spoof that was the 3rd instalment of the Austin Powers franchise. "Hey Goldmember" was a new song, but borrowed heavily from the past. It features 2 disco hits from K.C. & The Sunshine Band: "Shake Your Booty" and "That's The Way I Like It".
STEP BY STEP
Whitney Houston
(‘The Preacher's Wife’- 1996)
Whitney Houston was cast alongside Denzel Washington in the Christmas movie 'The Preacher's Wife'. The gospel-tinged soundtrack featured the hit single "Step By Step". Few would be aware that the song had been recorded previously by its writer Annie Lennox. The latter's version was the B-side for her single "Precious" in 1992.
MEET THE FLINTSTONES
The B-52s
(‘The Flintstones’- 1994)
The ever-popular animated TV series "The Flintstones" was adapted for the big screen with a human cast. The B-52s were a zany enough group to execute a version of its theme song that was in keeping with the 1960s cartoon show's attitude.
SHE'S LIKE THE WIND
Patrick Swayze
(‘Dirty Dancing’- 1987)
"She's Like The Wind" was a worldwide chart hit for Patrick Swayze who was also the lead actor in the box office smash musical 'Dirty Dancing'. The song was originally intended for another Swayze film. The actor co-wrote the love song for the 1984 film 'Grandview, U.S.A.' When the song was not used, Swayze suggested it for 'Dirty Dancing'.
SPIDER-MAN THEME
Michael Bublé
(‘Spider-Man 2’- 2004)
Michael Bublé recorded a new interpretation of the traditional "Spider-Man Theme", released to coincide with the 2nd film in the film franchise. His remake was given a jazz treatment and played over the closing credits of the hit film. Bublé had actually originally included the song on his 2001 album 'BaBalu'.
