THE DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES:
STING
[1985]
The Police called it quits at the pinnacle of the group's history. Having penned so many classics for the group, Sting was always assured the best chances of solo success following the break-up. Nevertheless, there would have been immense pressure on Sting as he launched his solo career with 'The Dream of the Blue Turtles'. He wisely avoided the trademark sound of his former band, choosing instead to explore other genres and influences. The focus shifted from the reggae and punk of The Police to a more jazz / pop feel on many songs. The themes are more adult and socially aware. The Cold War is dealt with in "Russians", heroin in "Children's Crusade", the Miners' Strike "We Work The Black Seam" and relationships "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free". Sting varies the moods and styles so well, the album still holds up to this day.
Highlight tracks: Russians; Fortress Around Your Heart; Children's Crusade & If You Love Somebody Set Them Free.
