SMOKEY ROBINSON
William Smokey Robinson, a gifted singer/ songwriter from Detroit, was born in 1940 and became a significant influence on the sound and success of Motown Records. An uncle gave him the nickname "Smokey Joe".
During his teens, he started his musical career performing in doo wop outfits. In 1955, Robinson formed a vocal group which, after some line-up changes, evolved into The Miracles.
Songwriter Berry Gordy Jr met Robinson in 1958. Impressed with the latter's songwriting, he helped The Miracles get a record deal. "Got A Job", the group's debut single, became a local hit. Other singles on different labels flopped. Robinson persuaded Gordy to launch his own label.
In 1960, The Miracles' "Shop Around" reached #2 Pop and topped the R&B Chart in America; giving Gordy's fledgling Motown label its 1st major success. A series of classic songs followed, including: "You've Really Got A Hold On Me", "Mickey's Monkey", "Ooo Baby Baby", "The Tracks Of My Tears" and"Going To A Go-Go".
By 1967, the singles were credited to Smokey Robinson & The Miracles. These hits included: "More Love", "I Second That Emotion" and "The Tears Of A Clown". The latter reached #1 in America and Britain in 1970.
Along with his role as lead singer and principal songwriter for The Miracles, Robinson penned many hits for other Motown acts. Among his soul staples are: "My Guy" (Mary Wells); "My Girl" and "The Way You Do The Things You Do"(The Temptations); "Ain't That Peculiar" (Marvin Gaye) and  "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game" (The Marvelettes).
Robinson married fellow Miracles member Claudette Rogers and in time, was promoted to Vice President of Motown. The label enjoyed immense chart success in the mid- to late 1960s.
Robinson quit The Miracles in the early 1970s. His debut solo album was issued in 1973. Smokey's biggest hits were "Cruisin'" (#4 in 1979) and "Being With You" (#2 in 1981). He reached the Top 10 twice in 1987 with "Just To See Her" and "One Heartbeat".
During the 1980s, Robinson dealt with an addiction to cocaine and divorced Rogers. His output slowed down in the 1990s. Recent years has seen Robinson release more albums and he continues performing.
His songbook's numerous classics have been covered by a wide diversity of performers such as Linda Ronstadt, Kim Carnes, The Beatles, Rare Earth, The Supremes, Human Nature and The Rolling Stones.
