#100
HALLELUJAH
“…Maybe there’s a God above,
but all I’ve ever learned from love,
was how to shoot somebody
who outdrew ya....
When Leonard Cohen presented the 'Various Positions' album to his record company, the label doubted its potential. Not even the track "Hallelujah" stood out as anything promising. Fortunately, Columbia relented, issuing the LP in 1984.
As time passed, a succession of remakes by artists such as Bob Dylan, John Cale and -most notably- Jeff Buckley revealed the song's power.
Cohen's lyrics bridge Biblical references related to King David and sex. The verses have a soothing, trance-like effect on the listener.
"Hallelujah"'s inclusion on Buckley's only complete studio album 'Grace' 10 years after the release of Cohen's original, brought the song mainstream attention. It has since been covered by numerous others, including Alexandra Burke, Pentatonix and (my preferred rendition:) K.D. Lang.
As new songs are covered on this blog, a definitive version will be added to a spotify playlist. Find it and the other Caffé Latté playlists at:
