Ike Turner was already an influential figure in rock 'n roll before Tina was recruited to join his tight touring band. As she is to be included further up among the Top 200 as a soloist, this biography will focus more on Ike.
He was born Izear Turner Jr in 1931. Turner formed his first group before reaching adulthood. In 1951, aged 20, he recorded what is widely regarded as a seminal rock 'n roll track, "Rocket 88". The disc was credited to Jackie Brenston & His Delta Cats, but it actually featured the former with Turner's Kings Of Rhythm. Turner was an uncredited co-writer of the track. He played piano at the time, but then switched to the guitar.
By the mid-Fifties, Turner's was a reputable outfit on the R&B circuit. In 1956, he met Annie Mae Bullock. In time, she was added to his band's line-up. Bullock was renamed Tina. She fell pregnant with the saxophonist before starting a relationship with Ike. In 1958, she legally became Mrs Tina Turner. The newlyweds soon started their own family.
"A Fool In Love" was the couple's first hit together. It reached #2 on the R&B Chart and #27 Pop in America in 1960. The act enjoyed a series of R&B chart hits including "I Idolize You", "It's Gonna Work Out Fine", "Poor Fool" and "Tra La La La La".
In 1966, Phil Spector produced the epic"River Deep, Mountain High". Although credited to the duo, this was actually a solo by Tina. The legendary producer was crushed that the track flopped in America, despite peaking at #3 in the UK.
Ike & Tina moved into the 1970s covering songs by The Beatles ("Come Together"), Sly & The Family Stone ("I Want To Take You Higher") and Creedence Clearwater Revival ("Proud Mary"). The latter returned the duo to the high chart rungs in 1971 and earned them a Grammy Award.
Tina penned "Nutbush City Limits", a rocker that stormed the charts 2 years later. It peaked at #22 Pop and 11 R&B in America as well as reaching #4 in Britain.
For too many years, Tina endured Ike's erratic and violent behaviour. His drug use was a major contributing factor. She finally decided to leave him. In 1976, they were officially divorced.
Ike continued his drug-fueled ways, resulting in a prison sentence. Upon his release, he kicked addiction and remarried. Ike formed a new Kings Of Rhythm and recorded some new albums which were critically praised.
In 2007, Ike died, most probably of an accidental cocaine overdose, in his Californian home. He was aged 76 at the time.
