Frankie Gaye had returned from the war in Vietnam and recounted his experiences to his brother Marvin. The latter was inspired to shift the focus in his music with the song and its parent album. Marvin Gaye recorded the landmark album 'What's Going On'. Released despite Motown chief Berry Gordy Jr's strong reservations in 1971, the LP saw the artist grow in stature.
The title track refers to the harsh realities of life. It is a strong anti-war statement. Gaye's song gave a voice to many in the margins of society. The single reached #2 in America.
