BEFORE IT WAS A HIT SONG…
These songs are well known
but you may not know about the earlier attempts to score a hit record with
prior versions of the same song.
Till I Loved You
Barbra Streisand's 1989 album 'Till I loved You' featured the title track, recorded as a duet with her then current beau Don Johnson (star of TV's 'Miami Vice'). Although this was the earliest version issued as a single, it was in fact a remake.
The original was recorded as part of a musical based around Spanish artist Francisco Goya. Although the musical never materialized, a concept album entitled 'Goya: A Life In Song' was released in 1989. Placido Domingo portrayed the painter. Dionne Warwick joined him for the duet on the recording.
A single was issued later, this time pairing the tenor with Jennifer Rush. The disc reached #24 in the UK. That same year, Streisand and Johnson's duet peaked at #16 in Britain and #25 in America.
